Starting at an altitude of 2,200 meters, you will discover the Cirque de Mafate, an enormous crater that can only be visited on foot or by bike. This mountain bike descent of the Piton Maïdo will take you through a forest of cryptomerias, Creole fir trees. You will have to negotiate a few technical sections in the Tamarins forest, pausing from time to time to admire the spectacular view over the north-west coast of Reunion Island.
As you leave the forest, you will catch a glimpse of the lagoon and the beach at Saint-Gilles-les-Bains. Then, after crossing meadows, your downhill mountain bike tour of Piton Maïdo will take you to the famous sugar cane fields of the Saint-Paul region. You will have covered a distance of around 35 km in 4 hours - a great half-day's activity!
